ABOVE

Every day we are faced with choices. We choose how to react to circumstances and we choose how to live our lives on a regular basis. What is most important to us guides the way we act or react.

Just the other day, somebody told me that they thought someone had taken money out of the donation can at the Student Center. I had a choice right then, to say that money was important or to say that what really mattered was that the individual who may have done this particular deed mattered even more in the overall scheme of things. I chose to believe in the value of the person rather than the value of the money.

Here’s something the Apostle Paul said that affects my thinking on the subject:

Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. Colossians 3:2 (NASB)

You see, what matters most is that person’s relationship with God, not a few dollars. We need to pray for and touch people’s souls. We need to let them know that they are more important to us than money or material things are. That’s real love.

SEEK FIRST THE KINGDOM OF GOD

WORK

What type of work do you do? Are you a steel worker, a carpenter, an administrative assistant or something else? Let me challenge you to share in a most, THE most important work that can be done on the face of the earth, the work of helping people to a wonderful relationship with Jesus Christ.

That was Paul’s work…

So we tell others about Christ, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all the wisdom God has given us. We want to present them to God, perfect in their relationship to Christ. ²⁹That’s why I work and struggle so hard, depending on Christ’s mighty power that works within me. Colossians 1:28 - 29 (NLT)

That is my work and that is your work. Take it seriously.

SEEK FIRST THE KINGDOM OF GOD

ONCE

I once was young. I once knew nothing about music. I once lived for myself.

Each of you can probably relate what I’m saying because once upon a time you were not who you are today. All of us grow, learn and become changed people simply with the passage of time.

The same is true for those who call themselves followers of Jesus Christ:

This includes you who were once far away from God. You were his enemies, separated from him by your evil thoughts and actions. Colossians 1:21 (NLT)

Even though now you may be a Christian, there was a time in your life when you did not live for Christ. Instead, you lived for yourself. You were “lost.”

Just thinking about that, should cause you to have more compassion for those you know who do not have Christ in their lives. Love them. Be Christ to them. Pray for them, just as someone once loved you so much that He died for you and people around you prayed for you, even if you weren’t aware of it. Don’t be a “snob” or an “elitist” Christian…it turns people away from God rather than to Him.

GIFT

If someone were to give you an iPod for your birthday, would you leave it in the box and forget about it? What if someone gave you a new car, would you simply park it in the garage and ignore the gift?

God has given every one of His children, those who have accepted Jesus Christ as Savior, a special gift:

However, he has given each one of us a special gift through the generosity of Christ. Ephesians 4:7 (NLT)

What are you doing with the gift(s) that God has given you?

God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another. 1 Peter 4:10 (NLT)

JOB

What is it that you work at? What is your job, your purpose in this life? I’m sure it’s something that is incredibly important to you. If it isn’t, you probably don’t work that hard at it…

but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ, Ephesians 4:15 (NASB)

Now that’s a purpose, a job worth working hard at…growing up IN ALL ASPECTS into Christ. He is our model, our “boss”, the one whom we want to please and become like. He is Jesus, the Son of God.

HISTORY

History was never one of my best subjects in school but as I grew older, I became more interested in it. I still don’t know much but I find it fascinating. Taking a look at which country discovered this or conquered that; which person is considered to be famous or infamous as the case may be, can be a fascinating study.

There is One who existed before all of our known, recorded history and One who will be even after you and I have ceased to live on this planet called earth…

This is what the LORD says—Israel’s King and Redeemer, the LORD of Heaven’s Armies: “I am the First and the Last; there is no other God. Isaiah 44:6 (NLT)

It may seem incredible to believe but it is even more incredible to try to imagine that intelligent life, if we may thus call humanity, simply “happened.” When man invents something like digital television, a device to open cans or anything else, no one questions or even imagines that those things simply “came into being.”

The Bible starts out, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). It further tells us that this was accomplished through His Son, Jesus Christ, (Colossians 1:16) who said,

I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.” Revelation 22:13 (NLT)

Which is easier to believe, that we just popped into existence by an environmental accident (oh yeah, where did the environment come from?), or that there is a loving God in heaven who made you, loves you and wants you to be with Him forever?

SHARE

Do you remember when you were young and your parents told you to share your favorite toy with a brother, sister or even a friend? Sharing weaves us together as a society; it helps us identify with each other as being “human.” Sharing problems with each other can knit us together as well. It helps us realize that we are all in this thing called “life” together.

Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ. Galatians 6:2 (NLT)

What is the law of Christ? Listen to Jesus’ own words…

“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. John 13:34 (NASB)

Listen to each other’s problems, empathize, comfort and console. This is love in action, the love of Christ.

SEEK FIRST THE KINGDOM OF GOD

HELP

Do you consider yourself “good”? What makes you good? How about “godly”? Do you consider yourself godly? Paul gives us an example of an action that is considered “godly”:

Dear brothers and sisters, if another believer is overcome by some sin, you who are godly should gently and humbly help that person back onto the right path. And be careful not to fall into the same temptation yourself. ²Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ. ³If you think you are too important to help someone, you are only fooling yourself. You are not that important. Galatians 6:1 - 3 (NLT)

Notice that being “godly” is not the same as being God! The second half of verse one is the clue….”be careful not to fall into the same temptation…” God cannot be tempted (James 1:13) but we can.

So the next time your thinking you’re too “good” or too important to help someone, rethink it. Do what God would do, and has done for you; help your brother or sister. Don’t beat them up or ignore them…help them in an attitude of love, understanding that you too, have the same potential for weakness.

HYPOTHETICAL

Here is a passage from Paul’s letter to the church in Rome. Immediately below it is a hypothetical letter to the church in “Anytown,” America. How far off is it?

Romans 2:17 - 24 (NLT) ¹⁷You who call yourselves Jews are relying on God’s law, and you boast about your special relationship with him. ¹⁸You know what he wants; you know what is right because you have been taught his law. ¹⁹You are convinced that you are a guide for the blind and a light for people who are lost in darkness. ²⁰You think you can instruct the ignorant and teach children the ways of God. For you are certain that God’s law gives you complete knowledge and truth. ²¹Well then, if you teach others, why don’t you teach yourself? You tell others not to steal, but do you steal? ²²You say it is wrong to commit adultery, but do you commit adultery? You condemn idolatry, but do you use items stolen from pagan temples? ²³You are so proud of knowing the law, but you dishonor God by breaking it. ²⁴No wonder the Scriptures say, “The Gentiles blaspheme the name of God because of you.”

You think you can instruct the ignorant and teach children the ways of God. For you are certain that God’s grace and indwelling Spirit gives you complete knowledge and truth. Well then, if you teach others, why don’t you teach yourself? You tell others not to steal, but do you cheat on your taxes or not return the overage when given too much change? You say it is wrong to commit adultery, but do you occasionally lust after another in your heart? You condemn idolatry, but do you perhaps worship your car, boat, home or other material possessions just a little too much? You are so proud of knowing what is right, but you dishonor God by ignoring it. No wonder it is said of you, “Those without Christ curse the name of God because of you and your hypocrisy.”

It doesn’t have to be that way! Pray for each other. Encourage each other. Pray for revival. Seek the face of the Almighty God. Just because you are not acting that way doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be praying for and hurting because others in Christ’s church are.

If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14 (NKJV)

SEEK FIRST THE KINGDOM OF GOD

JUDGMENT

If you never read the Motor Vehicles guide to safe driving, you would still be subject to the rules of the road. If the police officer stops you for running a stop sign, explaining to him that you didn’t know what it meant will not prevent you from getting a ticket.

In the same way, Paul tells us that ignorance of the law is no excuse before God…

When the Gentiles sin, they will be destroyed, even though they never had God’s written law. And the Jews, who do have God’s law, will be judged by that law when they fail to obey it. ¹³ For merely listening to the law doesn’t make us right with God. It is obeying the law that makes us right in his sight. ¹⁴ Even Gentiles, who do not have God’s written law, show that they know his law when they instinctively obey it, even without having heard it. ¹⁵ They demonstrate that God’s law is written in their hearts, for their own conscience and thoughts either accuse them or tell them they are doing right. ¹⁶ And this is the message I proclaim—that the day is coming when God, through Christ Jesus, will judge everyone’s secret life. Romans 2:12 - 16 (NLT)

The day is coming…for those of us that have surrendered our lives to Christ, He is our covering…

For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. Colossians 3:3 (NASB)

Those that have rejected Christ will have to appear before Him

I saw the dead, both great and small, standing before God’s throne. And the books were opened, including the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to what they had done, as recorded in the books. ¹³ The sea gave up its dead, and death and the grave gave up their dead. And all were judged according to their deeds. ¹⁴ Then death and the grave were thrown into the lake of fire. This lake of fire is the second death. ¹⁵ And anyone whose name was not found recorded in the Book of Life was thrown into the lake of fire. Revelation 20:12 - 15 (NLT)

Choose today to accept Christ’s sacrifice on your behalf. Your past will melt away in His glorious presence.

SEEK FIRST THE KINGDOM OF GOD

PLAIN

There are consequences for eating too much…it tends to cause you to gain weight! Since those consequences are so plain, why is it that we still overeat?

Chances are, it is because we are relying on ourselves to break the habit, rather than trusting in God.

The consequences of the weight gain may be increased illness and dying earlier than we might have, but the consequences of remaining in a life of sin without Christ are much more devastating.

Look at the simple way that Paul lays out the pros and cons of good and evil:

There will be tribulation and distress for every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew first and also of the Greek, ¹⁰but glory and honor and peace to everyone who does good, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. Romans 2:9-10 (NASB)

The correct choice is plain…Choose the goodness of Christ!

SEEK FIRST THE KINGDOM OF GOD

JUDGMENTAL

Who do you know, including yourself, that has never done anything wrong? Go back in your memory as far as you can, did you ever tell a fib? Did you ever let someone else take the blame for something you did? We’re all human and we all have made mistakes at some point in our lives, so how can we pass judgment on someone else who is or has made a mistake?

Here is what Paul has to say about that in his letter to the church in Rome:

Therefore you have no excuse, everyone of you who passes judgment, for in that which you judge another, you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things. Romans 2:1 (NASB)

There is only One who is qualified to judge people on their actions and that is the One True God. Isaiah says this of the Almighty God in the 9^th verse of the 26^th chapter of the Old Testament book bearing his name:

For only when you come to judge the earth

will people learn what is right.

A better path is to try to be understanding and show some empathy toward those who have or are in the process of making mistakes.

SEEK FIRST THE KINGDOM OF GOD

DARKSIDE

Wouldn’t it be cool if there were a checklist of things that pleased or displeased God? I have great news…there is! Paul gives us a list of things in his letter to the church in Rome. The things he lists are actions resulting from people rejecting the Almighty God.

Since they thought it foolish to acknowledge God, he abandoned them to their foolish thinking and let them do things that should never be done. ²⁹Their lives became full of every kind of wickedness, sin, greed, hate, envy, murder, quarreling, deception, malicious behavior, and gossip. ³⁰They are backstabbers, haters of God, insolent, proud, and boastful. They invent new ways of sinning, and they disobey their parents. ³¹They refuse to understand, break their promises, are heartless, and have no mercy. ³²They know God’s justice requires that those who do these things deserve to die, yet they do them anyway. Worse yet, they encourage others to do them, too. Romans 1:28 - 32 (NLT)

…those who do these things deserve to die…

Turn toward God, do those things that please Him in the power of His Holy Spirit as you walk with His Son Jesus Christ. Choose life!

SEEK FIRST THE KINGDOM OF GOD

NATURAL

“It’s only natural!” You’ve probably heard someone say that at some time in your life. The Encarta Dictionary presents the definition of natural as, “present in or produced by nature, rather than being artificial or created by people.”

The world in which we live is quietly doing away with any such definition. It only makes sense when you understand that our world has rejected the One who created nature, God. Rejecting God leaves one with accepting what man creates as being equally important to creation.

As I write this, preachers in Canada are not allowed to speak about what God states in His Word about homosexuality and the United States is quickly following suit.

Hear what Paul told the church in Rome…

For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. ²⁷Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due. Romans 1:26 - 27 (NKJV)

The “reason” he was speaking about, was mentioned in the previous verse and refers to those “who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator.”

Rejecting God is rejecting the One who created nature and instead accepting man’s perversion of the natural.

SEEK FIRST THE KINGDOM OF GOD

DOMINOES

Have you ever heard that old saying, “What a tangled web we weave when once we practice to deceive?” It’s kind of like playing dominoes, at least my understanding of dominoes. You know, where you stand them all on end about a half inch from each other and then you tip the one over, which in turn causes all of them to fall down in a regulated rhythmical motion.

When people choose to ignore God and His plan for their life, it’s kind of like playing dominoes. A series of “crashes” will occur. Paul talks about people that choose this path in his letter to the church in Rome:

So God abandoned them to do whatever shameful things their hearts desired. As a result, they did vile and degrading things with each other’s bodies. ²⁵They traded the truth about God for a lie. So they worshiped and served the things God created instead of the Creator himself, who is worthy of eternal praise! Amen. Romans 1:24 - 25 (NLT)

One of the problems with this lifestyle is that it affects other people as well, much like dominoes, end on end, affect each other when tipped over.

³²They know God’s justice requires that those who do these things deserve to die, yet they do them anyway. Worse yet, they encourage others to do them, too. Romans 1:32 (NLT)

Don’t trade the TRUTH of God for the lies and personal gratification that world system would have you follow.

SEEK FIRST THE KINGDOM OF GOD

CHOOSE

We are faced with choices everyday, choices that will have an impact on those around us as well as ourselves. It could be something as simple as choosing to return the extra $5 that a cashier gave you as change. By choosing to keep it, you cause that cashier to have to come up with $5 to make the drawer balance or at least have their competency questioned by their superiors. On the other hand, it you chose to return the extra money, you may cause the cashier to wonder why and have the opportunity to share your beliefs.

Some choices are much more serious than others are. Paul writes to the church in Rome about such a choice…

Yes, they knew God, but they wouldn’t worship him as God or even give him thanks. And they began to think up foolish ideas of what God was like. As a result, their minds became dark and confused. ²²Claiming to be wise, they instead became utter fools. ²³And instead of worshiping the glorious, ever-living God, they worshiped idols made to look like mere people and birds and animals and reptiles. Romans 1:21 - 23 (NLT)

To know that God exists because of the evidence in His Creation (people, mountains, trees, animals, ocean tides, rotation of planets, et al) and choose not to acknowledge Him as God has some serious consequences. Here Paul points out a few:

• Becoming fools
• Mind that is dark and confused
• Worshiping the creation rather than the Creator

We see evidence of this everyday and yet, we are called to pray for all men (& women) with the hope that someday they will see the error of their ways, acknowledge the One True God and embrace His plan of redemption for humanity through His Son Jesus Christ.

The choice is before you today…choose wisely.

SEEK FIRST THE KINGDOM OF GOD

EXAMPLE

I’ve always thought it was fantastic that the prophet Isaiah foretold the birth of Jesus some 700 years before it happened. Chapter eleven of the book of Isaiah predicts, “Then a shoot will grow from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots will bear fruit.”

Equally as fascinating, is that the prophet also predicts the personality of the One to be born. It also provides for those of us that call ourselves “Christians” or followers of Christ, a wonderful example by which to live.

³ He will delight in obeying the LORD. He will not judge by appearance nor make a decision based on hearsay. ⁴ He will give justice to the poor and make fair decisions for the exploited. The earth will shake at the force of his word, and one breath from his mouth will destroy the wicked. ⁵ He will wear righteousness like a belt and truth like an undergarment. Isaiah 11:3 - 5 (NLT)

• Obey God
• Don’t judge by appearances
• Don’t make a decision based on gossip
• Pursue justice for the poor and exploited
• Understand the power of the Word of God and the Holy Spirit
• Live a righteous life based on truth as it is put forward in God’s Word.

SEEK FIRST THE KINGDOM OF GOD

EXCUSELESS

Some things are obvious. Take an everyday item like an oven, turn the dial to 500 degrees and in a few minutes it will be very hot. If you reach in and grab the metal rack to pull it out with your bare hand, you will be burned.

Listen to these words these words from Paul to the church in Rome…

²⁰For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. Romans 1:20 (NASB)

God, who created all that is, has shown us His eternal nature through the vastness of the sky, the ocean and even the universe. He gives us pictures of eternity in the evergreen trees whose leaves are always colorful and remain on the branches.

His power can clearly be seen through the shapes, size and enormity of the mountains that surround us and the planets and stars that He has placed in the heavens.

His divine nature can be witnessed by realizing that we cannot make a sky or an ocean or a mountain. We look around us and see that sin is the prevalent force in our society, but when we accept the love of God, through the sacrifice of Christ Jesus, we clearly see His goodness, His mercy and His grace at work in our lives.

We have no excuse to discount God and His Word. We must bow to the Almighty God in humble reverence and submission to His will or suffer the consequences.

SEEK FIRST THE KINGDOM OF GOD

CONSEQUENCES

In most instances, people know when they are doing something that is wrong or unacceptable. When the choice is made to proceed, there are consequences of that action. There are always consequences.

¹⁸For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, ¹⁹because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. Romans 1:18 - 19 (NASB)

What excuses are left? While not everybody accepts God or His rules and regulations for His Creation, God is the One in front of whom we will all have to stand to give account of our lives and actions. Only those who have accepted Jesus Christ as their Savior will be hidden in Christ, covered by His atoning blood and concealed in Christ’s righteousness.

SEEK FIRST THE KINGDOM OF GOD

TREASURE

I love movies with treasure maps in the plot; National Treasure, King Solomon’s Mine and others like them. It’s just fun and probably, each of us would secretly love to discover a map that led to a great pile of treasure!

Paul tells the church in Rome where they can find the greatest treasure of all…

For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “But the righteous man shall live by faith.” Romans 1:17 (NASB)

What is the “it” he talks about? He is referring back to verse 16 and the subject is the “gospel.” The word “gospel” simply means good news or good message, but notice he says that the good news he is talking about results in salvation or deliverance. That’s powerful stuff.

The righteousness of God is revealed in the gospel, the good news about Jesus Christ. We can all read about that in Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, the four “gospels” in the New Testament of the Bible.

It’s an easy map to follow and the treasure at the end is the greatest treasure of all. Now go look at the map and start the journey!

SEEK FIRST THE KINGDOM OF GOD

UNASHAMED

Have you noticed the body language of a person who is ashamed? Often their head is lowered, they won’t look you in the eyes and their shoulders may droop. It’s not a confident look and it isn’t a comfortable feeling.

When someone is ashamed, it is because they believe they have done something wrong or are embarrassed about something. So why, do we often appear to be ashamed when it comes to talking about our faith in Jesus Christ?

Jesus said, “If anyone is ashamed of me and my message in these adulterous and sinful days, the Son of Man will be ashamed of that person when he returns in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.” Mark 8:38 (NLT)

There is nothing to be embarrassed about when it comes to acknowledging that the God who created you is your Savior and you trust Him completely! Paul put it like this….

For I am not ashamed of this Good News about Christ. It is the power of God at work, saving everyone who believes—the Jew first and also the Gentile. ¹⁷This Good News tells us how God makes us right in his sight. This is accomplished from start to finish by faith. As the Scriptures say, “It is through faith that a righteous person has life.” (or, “the righteous will live by faith.”) Romans 1:16 - 17 (NLT)

SEEK FIRST THE KINGDOM OF GOD

OBLIGATION

If someone does something incredibly nice for you, do you feel obligated to return the favor? It’s not as if you’ll die if you don’t, but you really want to do something for them so they will feel as good as you do.

Read this excerpt from Paul’s letter to the church in Rome to see how Paul felt obligated…

I do not want you to be unaware, brethren, that often I have planned to come to you (and have been prevented so far) so that I may obtain some fruit among you also, even as among the rest of the Gentiles. ¹⁴I am under obligation both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to the wise and to the foolish. ¹⁵So, for my part, I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome. Romans 1:13 - 15 (NASB)

The dictionary (Encarta – online) defines obligation as “Something owed:

something such as assistance or a debt that somebody owes in return for something given.”

So what was it that the church in Rome had given Paul? The answer is nothing. He hadn’t even been there. The obligation that Paul felt was to Jesus Christ. What had Jesus given Paul? Eternal life is the first thing that comes to mind, freedom from being a slave to the law and to sin. The list could go on indefinitely.

Paul felt obligated because of the incredible free gift that Jesus had imparted to him. He wanted to share the good news of Jesus and that free gift with everyone (Greeks, barbarians, wise and foolish, etc.).

Perhaps if we take some time to think about what Jesus has saved us from and the hope that we have to look forward to (i.e.; eternal life with Christ in heaven) we will fulfill our “obligation” to tell others about Him as well.

SEEK FIRST THE KINGDOM OF GOD

MUTUAL

Obviously, the best kind of a relationship to have with someone would be one that is mutually beneficial to you both. If you have a girlfriend or boyfriend, you are always doing something nice for them, and they treat you like an annoyance, it’s not too pleasant. You probably should look elsewhere for a more mutually satisfying companion.

In his letter to the church in Rome, Paul speaks of reciprocation:

that is, that I may be encouraged together with you while among you, each of us by the other’s faith, both yours and mine. Romans 1:12 (NASB)

As believers in Christ, we are to encourage one another; it is to be a mutual relationship. However, if we are not being encouraged by other Christians we cannot simply walk away from them (unless of course they aren’t acting at all like Christ or teaching something different from God’s Word), we can only love them and keep our half of the bargain…to encourage them.

We urge you, brethren, admonish the unruly, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with everyone. ¹⁵See that no one repays another with evil for evil, but always seek after that which is good for one another and for all people. 1 Thessalonians 5:14 - 15 (NASB)

Just as Christ did, we are to set the example for others, even, and perhaps especially our brothers and sisters in Christ. If we’re going to approve of competition as our society does, perhaps the best competition would be to try to be the most Christ-like. Of course, that includes humility, self-sacrifice and loving people even when they’re trying to kill you!

SEEK FIRST THE KINGDOM OF GOD

PRAY

Do you know someone who is a true friend, a person who will stick by his or her convictions no matter what? Do you tell other people about them? Do you sometimes boast about being their friend?

Hear Paul’s word to the church in Rome:

For God, whom I serve in my spirit in the preaching of the gospel of His Son, is my witness as to how unceasingly I make mention of you, Romans 1:9 (NASB)

Obviously that doesn’t mean that they were perfect, but it does mean that Paul loved and cared for these people in the church so much that he constantly brought them before God’s throne.

We are to bring our brothers and sisters in Christ before the Lord in prayer just as Paul did. Pray for each other in the Spirit of the Lord.

OBVIOUS

Can you spot a phony a “mile away?” Can people tell who you really are at first glance or after talking with you for a while? Have you ever heard of someone having a “good reputation” and yet never met him or her in person?

That’s what Paul is saying about the church in Rome…

First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, because your faith is being proclaimed throughout the whole world. Romans 1:8 (NASB)

Can you imagine having such a good reputation that people in other parts of the world would have heard about you? That’s something to strive for anyway, to be respected by others.

Even more important is that they would hear of our faith in Jesus Christ. After all, the way we act isn’t always going to be perfect, but trusting in God for the big and the little things and letting people know that’s what we are doing, will go a long way toward furthering the Kingdom of God. Be obvious about your faith.

Getting to the point in a conversation or a letter is an art. Often we try to skirt the main issue or work into it slowly, but when it is really important we just get right to it.

When Paul wrote to the Romans about the gospel he was called to preach about, he got right to the point…

²which He promised beforehand through His prophets in the holy Scriptures, ³concerning His Son, who was born of a descendant of David according to the flesh, ⁴who was declared the Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead, according to the Spirit of holiness, Jesus Christ our Lord, ⁵through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith among all the Gentiles for His name’s sake, ⁶among whom you also are the called of Jesus Christ; Romans 1:2 - 6 (NASB)

• Descendant of King David
• Raised from the dead
• Giver of grace
• Called us to be His own

Prophecies fulfilled, power displayed and an invitation for us to accept the grace that He offers to us. Praise the Lord for His wonderful plan.

PURPOSE

What is your purpose in this life? Is it simply to go to work, make money to buy food, eat and sleep? Or is there a purpose that goes beyond the immediate, as in the life of Paul…

Paul, a bond-servant of Christ Jesus, called as an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, Romans 1:1 (NASB)

Paul had a “regular” job as a tentmaker. However, you don’t find him speaking about it very much because it was a means to an end. It provided money to live on so he could continue to fulfill the purpose to which God called him, that of preaching the gospel. His mission in life was to tell others about Jesus Christ the Son of God.
